First week of Advent
the time when "God came near". This phrase is taken from the title of a book (by Max Lucado) I dip into during this season of Advent. It comprises short stories and reflections on the coming of God in the person of Jesus Christ.
I am very moved by this thought: that God would come near - right into our human condition, taking on human flesh. Yes, Jesus never sinned, but he experienced the frailties of being human, having needs and emotions that we often struggle with.
Advent is the time to prepare our hearts - to make space for the 'coming of God' into our lives. As it comes round every year, we are invited to review our lives and take stock of what has helped us notice God (and give him 'room') and what has been a hindrance to us.
We seek the grace to continue noticing - and for the grace to let go of the hindrances that block our noticing. Such hindrances include the obvious sinful habits, but also addiction to busyness and quick fixes.
In God's time.....things happen "in the fullness of (God's) time. I wonder at the patience of God as he waited to personally come into this glorious yet broken world, wearing the flesh of his beloved creature.
