In Jesus' family
Today's' reading reminds us of the closeness of the community we enter into when we align ourselves with Jesus. A community that is close knit, yet also encompassing many, special yet never obstructing the entry of those who wish to join the family. Inclusive enough to invite the poor, the marginalized and those who find it hard to be accepted elsewhere.
I hear Jesus speaking about "hearing and doing the word of God". This should make us examine our unconscious belief that it is a certain theology that makes us "family". It is about understanding what God's kingdom requires.....and doing that (though that's not easy either). Those who call themselves "Christians" embrace a spectrum of beliefs and doctrines. There are often misunderstandings between 'family members' what our Father's 'doctrinal stand' is! Thus 'hearing and doing' are given varying emphases by different branches of the family tree.
Therefore, I no longer believe that there is one answer or one size fits all in our practice, and by which we can measure the 'authenticity' of family members. Each one of Jesus' family, like our earthly family hears the call differently. What any parent, and more so our Father would want is that each family member show the world the unique face of Christ that he/she is. And last but not least, to show the world that our "God is love". A truly high calling for all of us who consider ourselves 'family of God'.
