Freedom to share the gospel

Luke 9: 1 - 6
Take nothing.......for your journey
The principle of detachment was thought of by Jesus - nothing new, nothing to do with Eastern religions that also teach 'detachment'. In the case of Jesus' twelve disciples, they were given gifts of healing and deliverance. At the same time, they were told to travel light. Perhaps this was so that they would continually need to depend on his empowerment for ministry. They had no other resource to rely on.
Today, we have so many encumbrances before setting out to minister and share the kingdom! We are armed with programs and techniques; losing sight of what we need most- to be empowered by Christ, through his Spirit. We feel more comfortable with stuff to fall back on, those things we can control! That's the reality of our ministry today.
But seriously speaking, Jesus is interested in inner detachment, poverty of spirit. Empowerment by God can lead to power and selfish gain; therefore he knows our need to hold on to love and humility in all service.
Are we fit to handle the power and authority God wishes to empower us with? Yes - as long as we seek detachment from all personal agenda (of course in this, we are never perfect; always learning and our love always being purified), seeking only the "praise, reverence and service" of God in all things. A high calling; a most honored one.
