Wisdom and innocence
.....be wise as serpents and innocent as doves
Being sent out to proclaim the "kingdom of God" is more than a glorious task, even though it is our 'service' for our eternal Lord and God. The disciples are warned of rejection and persecution - indeed Jesus is honest and direct with those he "calls". He does not give an easy job description only to lure and then leave his friends to fend for themselves!! He does not "use" his disciples and friends without concern for their welfare.
But indeed, the warnings are grim. There is no way one would follow except that we have discovered a greater love in our hearts - a love for our Lord; a love that burns our any self- serving intentions for service. These days, the context of ministry is not as hazardous in many parts of the world, though it still is in some areas. But whatever the external context, we are called to venture into kingdom work with both wisdom and innocence. We are not to be foolish in taking unnecessary risks, not asked for by the Lord. At the same time, we are to keep our hearts innocent and pure in order to remain focused on the Lord's guidance.
It is not easy to live these two stances, with some balance!! It is tempting to be 'gung ho' and even careless of true dangers, because we believe we are extending ourselves for the Lord.......On the other extreme it is easy to rationalize the need to self protect - for after all, the mission field is a dangerous place. Jesus does not give clear cut answers to his disciples!! (Do this, do that in clear exacting terms!) There are always surprising paradoxes to keep us looking to him, especially the example of his life......as we seek deeper understanding of his words.
