More repairs.....
Yesterday morning, I was at my new house feeling quite relieved that we are at the end of the renovations. The inside is almost done - just some fixtures to put up and doors to install.....It was looking quite 'finished'. So many decisions have had to be made about internal fittings, where to fix things like shelves, lights and so on. I was quite relieved that the work was mainly on the outside from now on. But surprise of surprises - after a sudden heavy downpour yesterday afternoon, there was leaking from a concealed gutter running from the middle to the back of the house!! The water poured down from the loft to the lower level. So - more work has to be done and decisions to be made. I was informed that the gutter cannot be repaired easily since it is under the floor...so the remedy is to cover the area served by the gutter with a roof.
One thing I learn from all this is that when things are done partially, as was the renovation done by previous owners, they are difficult to rectify later on. The initial result may have been satisfactory, but not taking into consideration future problems ( I was told that most gutter need changing after several years - so the concealed one was not a good idea).
So it is with many areas of our lives. Most of us prefer 'quick fixes' to things, satisfied that we have a solution.....and yet not waiting long enough to ponder future consequences. This is not to say that we should be so afraid of decisions and keep second guessing things. But there is much wisdom in waiting on the Lord, and more so in spiritual matters. The wise spiritual masters of old have reminded us that God is 'slow' - he takes his time. We might prefer to have someone or ourselves 'grow' quickly in the Christian life, but shortcuts do not produce long term sustainable growth.
I try to live at a slower pace, appreciating and pondering.....but of course some decisions have to made quickly....already my friendly contractor has called me this morning to ask my decision regarding the roof.
