Our life's work
Matthew 11 : 28 - 30
A yoke does not really seem an inviting thing to wear. It goes around the neck and seemingly makes one vulnerable to someone else. The oxen however do not seem to mind and patiently wear the yokes placed upon them, allowing themselves to be led and directed. Perhaps farmers have a way of calming the oxen, that they trustingly take on this 'yoke' as part of their life's work.
I cannot imagine human souls doing this easily. We too easily kick and struggle when our 'liberty' is curbed and try all means to regain some control. But perhaps our life's work - as Jesus says is to give up our 'liberty' to him, to commit ourselves to walk beside him, and to learn his ways. We would rather he 'walk beside us' than keep pace with him - a fine line when it comes to spiritually demanding 'our' ways.
Yes, perhaps it is our 'life's work' to be yoked to such a gracious Master. Then in giving up our liberty, we experience true spiritual freedom.
