Peace...be still...
Mark 4: 35- 41
...he awoke and rebuked the wind.....
The disciples' experience of the storm is not new to most of us. By the time we have 'lived life' in years we would all have felt their fear, we would have (in our own way and words, of course) spoken out to the Lord, " Teacher, do you not care if we perish?" And perhaps, if we listened hard enough, we might have heard his answer......"Be still"...In this instance Jesus calmed the storm immediately - the bewildered disciples were relieved of their anxiety quickly. But sometimes, as we all know, Jesus does not remove the "storm" in our lives so fast. The situation continues, but his word still goes forth, "Be still...be at peace.......I am in your midst". Well, in this instance it is harder to hear because we usually get all worked up about a situation and out spiritual sight becomes really myopic. But perhaps the word is still the same for us, for all time, whether the waves subside or not....."Peace, be still..."
It is hard, it is a great challenge to hear God's call to "Be still, be at peace..." when something seems so out of sync in our lives. It is also a great 'grace', a 'gift' that we could ask for, knowing that on our own we would never be able to still our hearts and minds and trust him.......
