What I do is me
As kingfishers catch fire, dragonflies draw flame;
Each mortal thing does one thing and the same:
....."myself" it speaks and spells;
Crying "what I do is me: for that I came."
I say more: the just man justices;
keeps grace: that keeps all his goings graces;
acts in God's eye what in God's eye he is -
Christ...........
-Gerard Manley Hopkins-
I believe each of us is on a journey towards finding out "who I really am", that is, at the core of our very beings. Sometimes we do this better - that is, everything we do seems to come from that center......seems to be full of the true life that we have received.......but there are also times when we do not do this very well. There are times when we make choices that take us further and further away from that place of centeredness. There are also in between times when we find ourselves doing useful things (in the eyes of those around us), yet feeling distracted and just not quite there. The other creatures seem to do this better...they are just what they are created to be. No frills, no fuss, no masks. And by observing nature, I have often been reminded that it is important to do the same in my own life. It is part of being authentic, reclaiming the core self that God has made. This is easy to proclaim but ever so hard when it comes to the crunch. You see, there are so many expectations and roles that can derail that good intention. One has to be very centered in order to know when to say No and when to say Yes to the many things that come along the way.
I am thankful for the Lord's constant call and help.....through the various spiritual disciplines that are meant to draw me back....remind me, free me from attachments .......so I can come to say "what I do is me: for that I came".
