Seeking treasures?
.....pearl of great value....
I think we know very well that the treasures that we should seek are the 'heavenly' ones. All Christians affirm that, at least in theory. But we have already 'inherited' the gift of eternal life by declaring our allegiance to Jesus. In a way, we are no longer like the man who bought the field or like the merchant of fine pearls who were, in a sense 'seekers'. Being Christian can lead us to complacence because we already have the treasure, or so we believe.
Maybe Jesus' words might strike us deeper at the heart if we begin to ask if we are still looking for treasure in the first place. Have we arrived? Or is there still further to go? If there is, then what kind of treasure are we looking for? The answer to that question is crucial to the spiritual journey. If we 'don't know', that may be an indication that we have stopped desiring and thirsting for the things of God.
I know that it is only my desire and longing that keeps me on this journey. I have tasted the wonder of encountering the Lord, and I know that those glimpses are just foretastes of better things to come, whether in this life or the next. God of course cannot be manipulated to 'give' what we want. But he has invited us to continue seeking the 'treasure' that we have tasted the first fruits of. There is more to come, if we only dare to trust and believe.
The two men Jesus spoke about were drawn by what they glimpsed and realized the value of. We too have seen much, if only we would recall God's goodness in our life. Then we might be the type of treasure seekers Jesus affirms.

Dear Lilian
On my Wednesday study, it was interesting to consider that Jesus was the seeker and after He found us, the precious pearls, He gave His all for us. We are His treasured possession, therefore how much more will I desire to become that treasured possession by obeying, trusting and desiring Him.
Just a thought that carried me through those 'critical' moments.
In His love

Dear Oli,
Thanks for your thoughts! Yes, I do sense too that the word 'treasure' works both ways. In fact, as you say, we are his treasure long before he became ours! We were sought and desired long before we became seekers after Him.
Praises and glory to God!
Lilian
