Being down to earth
Whoever exalts himself shall be humbled, but whoever humbles himself shall be exalted
I read in the newspapers that a lady MP from one of the political parties has resigned because she is unable to take the pressure any more. She is aware of her limitations and willing to accept her weaknesses at this stage. That, to me seems like one expression of humility. No more striving on pridefully knowing she would not be able to function well in the circumstances.
I remember reading somewhere that the word 'humility' is derived from 'humus' meaning the earth. This means, I guess that being humble has to do with knowing our origins and being down to earth about ourselves and our place in this world. It is easier to wish for rather than actually live a humble life. Everything around us tries to encourage pride in self, under the guise of self-esteem. It is sometimes confusing when we reach out to experience self-worth and discover how subtly pride sneaks into the picture.
I believe it is all a matter of reference point. The only way to remain down to earth is to have God as our reference point. Then the search for self-worth will lead us only nearer to Him. It will lead us to true self-knowledge - an awareness of our human condition as creatures of God, our loving Father. Every gift or talent we have comes from God (1 Cor. 4: 7). We use and share them as good stewards and not as owners. We do not put on airs when we use our talents and gifts. And in those times and situations when we know our limitations, that is ok too. We can accept our human frailty (which does not mean sinfulness).
There are times when we are really tired out, and in humility, we know it is ok to take time out. We are free from false images of self, the masks to show what we are not. Humility lets us be comfortable with ourselves. No fear of being passed over, no need to be praised all the time. And perhaps freedom also from the fear of failure due to our limitations. Such a way of living brings much peace.
And the person we are invited to learn from is our Lord himself, for he is "gentle and humble of heart" (Matt. 11: 29). Then will our souls find rest.
