Spiritual preparation
Simeon....was righteous and devout....and the Holy Spirit was upon him
It is difficult to say 'No' to things that are good but that may not bring us in the direction that the Lord is leading us. There are always areas of attachment that cause us to be drawn to certain things. I had to firmly say 'No' to taking up a further training course in spiritual accompaniment. I think it was all the more difficult because I heard about it near the closing date and had to make up my mind quickly. The drawing came from my own 'need', rather than the Spirit's leading. But with many rationalizations, I could make myself believe that it would be a good thing, after all! Fortunately, I was able to speak to my spiritual companion about this, and as I heard myself describe the inner movements, I found my answer.
As I read today's gospel, I was truly struck by the description of the two devout people who were present when Jesus was presented at the temple. Simeon was righteous and devout, he was waiting for the consolation of Israel, the Holy Spirit was upon him and moved by the Spirit he went into the temple courts. Anna was a prophetess and her ministry was undergirded by constant worship, fasting and praying.
I think the above describes people of deep spirituality. Their focus was completely on the Lord and they allowed themselves to remain open to the Spirit's leading. In addition, the disciplines of worship, fasting (this includes doing without certain other 'goods' apart from food) and prayer are non negotiables for anyone who is journeying with God. For me, the 'waiting' is usually the most difficult part, yet without a patient inner stance, many of the other disciplines may just be a means to achieve 'my' goal, rather than God's. I know the Lord is telling me to wait upon him and not get caught up with my own agenda. This word "wait' is not a new one....I am grateful the Lord is patiently reminding me.
