Authority and power
They were amazed at his teaching, because his message had authority
On Sundays, I wonder what the average Christian takes away from his or her experience in church. Are the ears tickled, some thoughts fed to the head, the emotions stirred a bit.......but then it is business as usual as Sunday lunch time (an important meal for many as it is more relaxed than work day lunches) approaches? It is strange (but also sad) isn't it that once the service is over and coffee break time comes along, people start talking about everything else except how they were moved by God's Word.....and perhaps how they hope to respond?
How often do we really 'wake up' because God's Word has come through with clarity? When was the last time you or I were amazed? Or left the service with wonder in our eyes and joy in our hearts? We should not put the responsibility solely on our preachers. Rather, are we as listeners ready and open to be touched by God each Sunday? Do we go with hearts ready to be transformed.......just that one bit more into the image of our Lord?
When I became intentional about my faith, I started off by taking notes during sermons. Then I would read and reflect on them during the week. I thought this was a common practice. But when I shared this with my mentor, she said that it is not at all the usual practice for the average Christian. I was being initiated into the 'normal' church life! Well, I still take notes, although not as regularly. But I do keep in mind the key insight that has struck me or moved my heart and allow it to 'simmer' during the week and listen to what more God has to say to me about it.
When Jesus taught on the Sabbath, people were amazed at his teaching, because his message had authority. They had an experience, their hearts were moved......as this young teacher broke open the Word. In addition they also witnessed a deliverance and healing which they would have understood as coming from God. The authority and power of God was palpably present. Something was up........the people in the synagogue on that day may not have understood everything with clarity, but they knew there was something more to all this.
Sometimes, when we sense the presence and power of God clarity does not come all at once. I believe it is important first to note where our hearts have been moved. And take this away with us as the gift of the Sabbath. As we continue to listen to the Lord during the week, he will I am sure bring deeper appreciation and invite a response to that Word of power and authority.
